On July 16, the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty of Ukraine, the Faculty of Journalism of Lviv University held a Solemn Academy on the occasion of the awarding of bachelor’s diplomas.

Traditionally, the celebrations began with the anthem of Ukraine and a minute of silence in memory of all graduates and teachers of Lviv University who fell in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Maryan Lozynsky, addressed the graduates with a welcoming speech and instructions. He thanked them for the four-year journey they had traveled together – sometimes difficult, emotional, full of both scientific and non-scientific discussions focused on the search for truth and knowledge.

Vice-Rector for Scientific Work Olena Kvas congratulated the graduates of the Faculty of Journalism, parents and teachers and wished them to bear the title of graduate of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv with dignity, noting: “Every finish is, in fact, a start,” wrote Lina Kostenko. I wish to savor this finish, because there will certainly be a start. The education obtained is the foundation of professional ascent.” The following received gratitude from the University from the hands of the vice-rector: Alina-Angelina Shtempel, Maksym Sharan, Maryan Chupak, Yuliya Portsina, Sofia Fenko and Yuliya Babichyn.

The head of the Department of Radio and Television, Paraska Dvoryanin, addressed the graduates with a welcoming speech: “The road will be overcome by the one who walks! You, our dear graduates, walked with dignity, courage, and responsibility, despite the war, anxiety, and threats… We, the teachers, walked with you: we shared knowledge, energy, and love. I had the unique opportunity to be the head of the examination committee for the defense of qualifying bachelor’s projects. The topics you chose and how you defended your intellectual achievements were impressive. Thank you for the fact that our common path gave us knowledge, strength, and faith in Victory.” Associate Professor Paraska Yaroslavivna wished the graduates confidence and an easy path forward and presented certificates from the Regional Council to the head of the Laboratory of Modern Media Technologies, Maryan Pavlyk, and bachelor’s student Alina Shtempel.

Associate Professor of the Department of Theory and Practice of Journalism Natalia Voytovych wished the students to proudly bear the title of graduates of the faculty, emphasized the important mission of a journalist today, and also presented Alina Shtempel with an Honorary Certificate from the Secretariat of the National University of Journalism for the creation of the documentary film “Alive. Taras Matviyiv”.

Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Journalism for Scientific and Educational-Methodological Work, Associate Professor of the Department of Media Rhetoric and Speech Communication Andriy Yatsenko, congratulating the graduates, noted that this course is special for him: “With you we wrote, won, participated in conferences, competitions, communicated a lot and cheered. But most importantly, we experienced different emotions with you. Because you were always sincere”. He concluded his congratulatory address with a quote from Taras Matviyiv: “But there are too many words in this world. So few actions! You had many sincere words and worthy deeds!”.

Associate Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Press Halyna Yatsenko emphasized that although there were few words, there were many emotions, because this is a special course, similar to elite perfumes that have their own heart note. “The heart note of your course was intellect and openness to the world. You let us teachers into the hearth of your interests and generously threw brushwood into intellectual discussions. You opened your heart. I wish everyone to preserve its purity, to always hear the voice of their conscience, winged dreams. Remember, thousands of lives and deaths dedicated to Ukraine are behind you! Your alma mater with its magnificent history and intellectual potential is behind you.”

Associate Professor of the Department of Media Rhetoric and Speech Communication, guarantor of the OP “Journalism” Khrystyna Datsyshyn wished this year’s bachelors of journalism to achieve their goals, but at the same time not to lose the ability to dream and addressed the graduates with the words: “I will talk to you about a dream. What is a dream? Light, distant, ephemeral, aspiration, desire. A dream has incredible power that can carry you into the future. Volatile, like a thought. Romantics can dream and they can turn the world upside down. But for this they need a point of support. Such people are called realists. And they give a dream a name – a goal. Every step, even the smallest, makes a dream more tangible. It is good when the features of both are combined: dreams and goals.”

Graduate Alina Shtempel delivered a welcoming and farewell speech: “They say our life is like a small but interesting journey, the length of which is different for everyone. Each stage of this journey has three goals. The first: to give valuable knowledge and experience so that we develop and become better. The second: to teach – through mistakes, pain and tears, so that we grow up. And the third, most important, to give People and Love so that we Live. The faculty has taught and given everything.” On behalf of the graduates, she thanked the teachers who helped, promoted and taught. Parents – for their support and defenders: “We received diplomas on the 11th year of the war thanks to those who protect our sky. The main thing is to take care of yourself. May fate bring us together again, because we met not by chance,” Alina emphasized.

Valeria Danylyuk, a graduate, recalled all the conditions in which she had to study: coronavirus, distance learning, full-scale war. “Over the years, we have grown not only as professionals, but also as individuals. We are grateful to the teachers for their patience, honesty, understanding and support. For not letting us lose heart.” Valeria remembered Bohdan Markevich, who died, but left in her heart a kind and bright memory of himself as a teacher and a person.

She also reminded about the collection of 100 thousand UAH for the Nachtigal brigade for repeaters. You can join the collection at the link
