International Conference on the 95th Anniversary of the Birth of Professor Volodymyr Zdorovega
On October 23, the University’s Hall of Mirrors hosted the grand opening of the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Current Problems of Modern Journalism: From Theory to Practice, from Traditional to New Media” dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the birth of Honored Professor of Lviv University Volodymyr Zdorovega.
The Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Maryan Lozynsky, addressed the academic community with a welcoming speech: “Freedom of speech is not needed by journalists. It is needed by society,” emphasized Volodymyr Yosypovych Zdorovega in 2000 in a conversation with Oleksandr Lavrynenko, a journalist for the Den newspaper. When Oleksandr asked him to predict what journalists would write about tomorrow, Professor Volodymyr Zdorovega replied: “We need broad and reliable information. This is the foundation of the foundations.”
Maryan Lozynsky emphasized that both of these theses form the basis of the concept of modern standards for training future journalists at Lviv University. It is on these principles that the process of developing various forms of organized training of bachelors and masters of the Faculty of Journalism is being formed. He also emphasized the importance of high-quality counter-propaganda to neutralize the information and propaganda influence of the russian media.
“It is clear that today’s war requires us, the academic community, to rethink and restructure the educational process in the professional and information training of journalistic personnel,” the dean noted.
Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation of Lviv University Olena Kvas greeted the conference participants and noted: “This conference is dedicated to Professor Volodymyr Zdorovez, who personified the Lviv School of Journalism – known and recognizable not only in Ukraine, but also far beyond its borders. This scientific event is dedicated to the problems of journalism and at the same time reflects the fact that today the basic values of the school, laid down by the famous professor, are still being implemented. This is a memory of his scientific achievements, of human destiny, of the true dimension of human life.”
Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs of the University of Szczecin Andrzej Skrendo addressed the conference participants with a welcoming speech and reminded them of the signed agreement between the universities and fruitful cooperation. “We know about your loss as one of the oldest schools of journalism. The position of protecting the word and democracy is one of the tasks of journalists. We have a common mission and a common responsibility for the word, and therefore, for the development of democracy and freedom in our countries,” the professor emphasized.
Natalia Antoniuk, daughter of Professor Volodymyr Zdorowega, warmly remembered her father, telling how he shaped their worldview with her sister Mariana Zdorowega through leisure and study.
“He was a wonderful son, always in touch with his mother. He personified everything he told students about. He lived journalism. The main area of his scientific interests was the methodology of journalistic creativity. His science and life guidelines were passed on to my sister and me, because we also work in education,” said Natalia Antonyuk.
At the end, she expressed sincere gratitude to the teaching staff of the Faculty of Journalism and everyone involved in the organization and promotion of the conference.
After the ceremonial part and greetings, the conference continued its work in the format of a plenary session, at which guests from Kyiv, Sumy and Ternopil spoke.
The Chairman of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, Oleh Nalyvayko, addressed the participants and emphasized: “The information activity of the Faculty of Journalism is impressive. This indicates the unity of the journalistic community around the wills of Volodymyr Zdorovega.” His report concerned the role and importance of the public broadcaster in the modern media space.
After a short break, the work of the International Scientific Conference was continued in sections in an online format.
The conference was attended by representatives from various cities of Ukraine – Kyiv, Sumy, Rivne, Uzhgorod, Zhytomyr, Kamianets-Podilskyi, Poltava, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Ternopil, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia, Lutsk, as well as scientists from Poland, the USA, Serbia and Turkey.
